Scoring system

Scoring The Game

A game of Tenpins consists of ten frames. Each player has to bowl two balls in each first nine frames except when he shall make a strike. A player who scores a strike or a spare in the tenth frame will be able deliver three balls for the respective frame. A ball is legally delivered when it leaves the bowler's possession and crosses the foul line into playing territory.

Strike

A strike is recorded when player completes a legal delivery and bowls down the full set-up of ten pins on the first ball. It is designated by an (X) in the small square in the upper right hand corner of the frame in which the complete set of ten pins is bowled down with the first ball. The count in each frame where a strike is bowled will be left open until the player has completed two more deliveries. The maximum count on 1 strike when followed by a spare is 20.

Double

When a bowler bowls two strikes in a row, he shall have scored a double. The count in the frame where the first strike was bowled will be left open until the player has completed his next delivery. When all pins are knocked down twice in a row, the count for the first strike is 20 plus the number of pins knocked down with the first ball of the third frame following. Lets say the maximum count of the third frame following is 9 pins, and a bowler got a two strikes before that, then the bowler will have a score of 29 on his/her first strike.

Turkey

In scoring three strikes in a row, the player will have a score of 30 in which the first strike was bowled.

Spare

Any bowler who bowls down the remaining pins with a legally delivered second ball in any frame will score a spare and it is designated by a ( / ) in the small square in the upper right hand corner of the frame in which it was made. The number of pins knocked down after first delivery before the player bowls for the spare will be marked with by a small figure in the upper left hand corner of the frame. The count in such frame will be left open until the player has bowled the first ball in the following frame. The number of pins knocked down by the first ball will be added by 10 represented by his/her spare and the total will be credited to the bowler 1 frame before when the bowler got a spare.

That's how the score systems goes =)

Styles & Techniques

Each bowler adopt different style of delivery in bowling. We will not discuss about the straight ball delivery because it is the simplest among all. Aside from straight ball, there are 3 different styles which can be adopted by a bowler which are

Stroker

This style is the classic but smooth and elegant style in bowling. Most of the bowlers need to learn this style first before they adopt another style. A stroker emphasize on a perfect timing to produce an excellent delivery. A stroker has a normal backswing with a straight arm and his shoulders are square towards its target. The sliding foot stops just before the ball gets to the line. This creates a moderade leverage for a good and controllable reaction. In the long run of any tournaments, stroker's consistency will usually win out.

Cranker

Cranker style is the more modern bowling style. This style is used by bowlers which nature it is to open up their shoulders and use power and muscle to deliver the ball. They have a high backswing in order to produce high revs. They use 'late' timing, getting to the foul-line long before the ball, they 'plant-and-pull'; little or no slide and bend the elbow to keep the hand behind and under the ball. There is a lot of lower and upper body strength needed: notice how there is a strong push into the finish and the shoulders are still open to accomodate a high backswing. Those who like a high revs and maximum power would want to try this method. However, a cranker will be more vulnarable to injury compared to stroker.

Spinner

This is another style which is totally different from stroker and spinner. Helicopter/spinner style bowlers have developed a release which spins the ball on nearly vertical axis. This has two results, firstly friction is reduced so the bowlers can play both oily and dry lanes and, secondly, the spinning ball creates great mix so the bowler gets less splits and carries a higher percentage of strikes than a simple straight ball could. The spinner bowler is actually playing to use the deflection off the head pin, run the ball down the side of the deck so that the spin mixes up the pins to carry the strike.

About Bowling

1. Choosing A Bowling Ball

Choosing a suitable bowling ball is indeed an extremely important factor that will affect the scores of a bowler. However, there is a standard laid d
own by the American Bowling Congress (ABC) if official recognition is to be given to any competitions throughout the world.

  • The standard ball weight ranges between a minimum of 8lbs to a maximum of 16lbs.
  • The circumference must be 27 inches and
  • The diameter must be 8.5 - 8.59 inches

Bowling balls are made of plastic, polyester, urethane, reactive resin or particle. It's is also called a coverstock as it covers the core and creates the outside surface of the bowling ball.

2. The Lane and Pins

i) Lane
Bowling lane is divided into five parts which is approach, gutter, players area, the lane and the pins. Players area is the section where bowlers usually wait on his turn to bowl. The area that falls before the foul line is the approach. This is an area where players makes their steps towards the foul line to deliver the bowling ball. The area that the ball travels its way through the pin is called the lane. A lane consists of 39 boards. The first 12 ft of all wooden lanes is made of maple, the next 46 feet is made of pine and the pin deck is made of maple. The length of the alley is standard for most of the bowling alleys, which is 60 feet from the foul line to the head pin. The width of the normal bowling alley is 42 inches. The area on the right side of the 1st board and on the left side of the 39th board is called the gutter. Bowling balls normally falls into the gutter due to poor delivery and it mostly happens to those who just started to play bowling.

ii) Pins
Tenpins are 15 inches in height, and must weigh not less than 2 pounds (6 oz) and not more than 3 pounds (10 oz). The width of the pin is 4.75 inches wide. The design of all pins is clearly prescribed by the ABC. The distance between each pin is 12 inches from the center of a bowling pin to another. The distance between pin 1 and pin 7/10 is 36 inches and the distance between a sleener is 20.75 inches.

Addicted for Bowling

My life all this while is just more about sports, sports and sports. And currently, my love for sports, especially, not to mention , bowling is getting deeper ever since I discovered how to hook a bowling ball, which most of the professional players do and it ignites me to practice more and more in order to be like them someday HaHa~~. It took me about a year just to learn how to hook, not "how to hook well". Quite long huh??

After knowing how to hook, I patronize the bowling centre more frequently with my coursemates, hoping to improve my hooking skill and my shot consistency. My visit to bowling centre from 2-3 times per month drastically increase to 5 times per week. Since I only owns a motorcycle <-- poor me , I was only able to hitch only 1 friend with me. Hence I always hitch a different victim with me every single time i went to the bowling alley =p

It's quite frustrating to throw the ball directly towards the gutter after knowing how to hook. I frequent to youtube to look for bowling tournaments and guidelines videos to replace the coach. Hopefully my effort will not be a waste because most of the people in the internet during my refined search about bowling, saying that coach is always better than self-learning. It's true since coach is able to detect mistakes on the spot so that these mistakes will not become habits which will greatly affect one's bowling scores. Well forget about that, I am the person who goes with the saying "Practice Makes Perfect". I believe that I will be able to be a professional bowler someday if I practice hard and smart and these videos are actually a stepping stone for me to achieve my goal^^
